It is 100 million% mindset related. It is 100 million% mindset related. I'm not saying that because we're pie bytes and all I'm not saying that because we're pie bytes and all about the mindset, of course. about the mindset, of course. But I am saying this because it's the truth. But I am saying this because it's the truth. If you don't have the mindset for this, it is If you don't have the mindset for this, it is going to be ten times harder than it has to going to be ten times harder than it has to be. be. If you're looking to improve your python, your career, and If you're looking to improve your python, your career, and learn the mindset for success, this is the podcast for learn the mindset for success, this is the podcast for you. you. Let's get started. Let's get started. Welcome back, everybody, to the PY Bytes podcast. Welcome back, everybody, to the PY Bytes podcast. This is Bobaldebos. This is Bobaldebos. I'm here with Julian Sequeira. I'm here with Julian Sequeira. How's it going, everyone? How's it going, everyone? Hey. Hey. It's been forever. It's been forever. I know. I know. Up on a podcast together, we keep saying that every Up on a podcast together, we keep saying that every time we get back to an episode, there's been weeks time we get back to an episode, there's been weeks in between us recording. in between us recording. So one day we'll get it. So one day we'll get it. We'll figure it out again. We'll figure it out again. Yeah. Yeah. So if this is a bit of banter and randomness, So if this is a bit of banter and randomness, forgive us, but we do have some structure today in forgive us, but we do have some structure today in an interesting topic. an interesting topic. But before we get there, do we want to do But before we get there, do we want to do wins? wins? Yeah, let's do wins. Yeah, let's do wins. Firstly, I'll jump in. Firstly, I'll jump in. Why do we do wins, actually? Why do we do wins, actually? Oh, that's a good question. Oh, that's a good question. We do wins to celebrate progress, to show ourselves that We do wins to celebrate progress, to show ourselves that we're continuously achieving something, no matter how big or small, we're continuously achieving something, no matter how big or small, doesn't matter, but to show progress, and it keeps you doesn't matter, but to show progress, and it keeps you motivated. motivated. I like that one. I like that one. What do you think? What do you think? Yeah, and accountability, right? Yeah, and accountability, right? No, I just want to make sure, I think. No, I just want to make sure, I think. Why? Why? It's a good mindset thing. It's a good mindset thing. You know, it makes you feel good. You know, it makes you feel good. You have to force yourself to look for it, but You have to force yourself to look for it, but because sometimes it's easy to look at the negative or because sometimes it's easy to look at the negative or the sad or whatever. the sad or whatever. So you got to find that win. So you got to find that win. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. No, it's, as we always say, inevitably it gets tough, No, it's, as we always say, inevitably it gets tough, and then you can fall back on your wins file and then you can fall back on your wins file or success wall, whatever you want to call it, and or success wall, whatever you want to call it, and then you can remember where you've come from. then you can remember where you've come from. And also, like, you know what I just say? And also, like, you know what I just say? We're going to have to listen to every podcast episode We're going to have to listen to every podcast episode to get all of our wins. to get all of our wins. That's also the comparison game, right? That's also the comparison game, right? Like, when you fall in that trap, compare yourself to Like, when you fall in that trap, compare yourself to others, then you rather can compare yourself to reading the others, then you rather can compare yourself to reading the wins two, three years ago, and you can realize, like, wins two, three years ago, and you can realize, like, oh, those were wins back then. oh, those were wins back then. Look at the wins now. Look at the wins now. Yeah, comparing. Yeah, comparing. Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. Right. Right. Anyway, what's your win of the week, then? Anyway, what's your win of the week, then? So my win is a win for Pibytes. So my win is a win for Pibytes. It's a win for us all. It's a win for us all. It's a win that we launched our veteran program. It's a win that we launched our veteran program. So for all of you listening and watching, this is So for all of you listening and watching, this is a coaching program similar to our Pibytes developer initialization program, a coaching program similar to our Pibytes developer initialization program, the one for beginners, except it's focused on military veterans. the one for beginners, except it's focused on military veterans. So it doesn't matter what country you're from. So it doesn't matter what country you're from. At the end of the day, when you're in the At the end of the day, when you're in the military, there are certain things that you've learned that don't military, there are certain things that you've learned that don't really translate to the corporate world when you eventually retire really translate to the corporate world when you eventually retire from the military. from the military. So this program handles that piece, a bit of that So this program handles that piece, a bit of that transitional piece. transitional piece. But what we also do is we teach python at But what we also do is we teach python at the same time. the same time. So we thought, let's combine the two so that you're So we thought, let's combine the two so that you're learning a real technical ski skill that can help you learning a real technical ski skill that can help you in pretty much any career that you take, and at in pretty much any career that you take, and at the same time, will give you that transitional benefit as the same time, will give you that transitional benefit as well. well. So my ask for everyone listening, if you know anyone So my ask for everyone listening, if you know anyone who's transitioning out of the military, who already has, who who's transitioning out of the military, who already has, who you feel could benefit from something like this, please let you feel could benefit from something like this, please let us know, because it's pretty exciting. us know, because it's pretty exciting. And the people that we've already spoken to about it, And the people that we've already spoken to about it, very excited. very excited. We've had one scholarship already paid by a foundation, so We've had one scholarship already paid by a foundation, so we need to dive more into that. we need to dive more into that. That's not the time now, but it is something that That's not the time now, but it is something that we're doing, so it's pretty cool. we're doing, so it's pretty cool. There's the win. There's the win. Yeah, no, and thanks for all the work on that. Yeah, no, and thanks for all the work on that. You've been pushing that hard, and that's pretty amazing what You've been pushing that hard, and that's pretty amazing what has come out of it. has come out of it. And so the python. And so the python. Sorry, go on. Sorry, go on. I was going to say sorry, man. I was going to say sorry, man. You just reminded me. You just reminded me. I would be remiss if I didn't mention Isaac Smith, I would be remiss if I didn't mention Isaac Smith, who we had on the podcast, you know, a couple who we had on the podcast, you know, a couple of months ago. of months ago. He's been partnering with me on this, and he is He's been partnering with me on this, and he is one of the people who'll be supporting the program. one of the people who'll be supporting the program. So he's part of the pie Bytes team now. So he's part of the pie Bytes team now. It's amazing, and it's all really, really cool. It's amazing, and it's all really, really cool. So thank you, Isaac. So thank you, Isaac. If you. If you. When you listen and watch, listen to and watch this. When you listen and watch, listen to and watch this. So thank you for all your help. So thank you for all your help. Appreciate it. Appreciate it. Yeah, no, because I can help with the python. Yeah, no, because I can help with the python. Right. Right. But I don't have a veteran background, and he has. But I don't have a veteran background, and he has. So we have real world experience and, yeah, it's a So we have real world experience and, yeah, it's a really interesting combination. really interesting combination. And the python is beginner coaching. And the python is beginner coaching. Right. Right. It's like PDI. It's like PDI. Yep. Yep. From zero. From zero. Yeah. Yeah. So it's very. So it's very. Actually very similar to PDI, but it has some extra Actually very similar to PDI, but it has some extra features on top of it. features on top of it. Specialized. Specialized. Yeah. Yeah. Veterans. Veterans. Yeah, just for veterans, stuff that, you know, if you Yeah, just for veterans, stuff that, you know, if you haven't served in the military, this stuff's not going to haven't served in the military, this stuff's not going to be appropriate or applicable to you. be appropriate or applicable to you. So we want to really focus this one down just So we want to really focus this one down just on the. on the. On veterans. On veterans. Yeah, it's pretty good. Yeah, it's pretty good. I'm pretty excited at Brad of it, but we actually I'm pretty excited at Brad of it, but we actually need to add it to the page now. need to add it to the page now. Yeah, we got to do all that. Yeah, we got to do all that. All that stuff now. All that stuff now. So we'll get there. So we'll get there. What about you? What about you? What's your win? What's your win? Awesome. Awesome. The win is that I started working with Robin, one The win is that I started working with Robin, one of our coaches, on pibytes AI. of our coaches, on pibytes AI. So I'm scraping all the public content and we're going So I'm scraping all the public content and we're going to put that in an AI to better serve our to put that in an AI to better serve our customers and clients. customers and clients. So it's pretty cool. So it's pretty cool. I guess he's really on the cutting edge with that I guess he's really on the cutting edge with that stuff, Marvin, AI OpenAI and all that stuff. stuff, Marvin, AI OpenAI and all that stuff. Definitely something I want to learn as well. Definitely something I want to learn as well. Llms. Llms. But so far I'm just doing the scraping in data But so far I'm just doing the scraping in data side and then he will do his magic and I side and then he will do his magic and I will get up to speed with that as well. will get up to speed with that as well. So it's pretty cool because you imagine having a chat, So it's pretty cool because you imagine having a chat, GPT kind of instance, and then it's fully tailored to GPT kind of instance, and then it's fully tailored to pivot. pivot. It knows a lot about pivot. It knows a lot about pivot. Right. Right. So I can only imagine how cool that's going to So I can only imagine how cool that's going to be from a user experience. be from a user experience. That's super cool perspective. That's super cool perspective. I love it. I love it. So, Bob, my question is, is it going to put So, Bob, my question is, is it going to put you and me out of a job? you and me out of a job? Well, that would be a good thing, right? Well, that would be a good thing, right? Just asking the question everyone's asking. Just asking the question everyone's asking. Of course not. Of course not. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, of course it will. Yeah, of course it will. Yeah. Yeah. Nice. Nice. All right, well, look, let's. All right, well, look, let's. Let's dive into the. Let's dive into the. To the episode. To the episode. But firstly, actually, thank you for working on that. But firstly, actually, thank you for working on that. That, uh, you and Robin doing that is incredible. That, uh, you and Robin doing that is incredible. Can't wait. Can't wait. No, just started. No, just started. It is true. It is true. Like it. Like it. I have this coding edge, so it's nice to have I have this coding edge, so it's nice to have a project again to keep learning, you know, and just a project again to keep learning, you know, and just a lesson for everyone out there listening who's doing coding a lesson for everyone out there listening who's doing coding and stuff. and stuff. Uh, this is one of those lessons of just dive Uh, this is one of those lessons of just dive in and do it. in and do it. Don't sit there and on the idea and, um, and Don't sit there and on the idea and, um, and r and think and debate for. r and think and debate for. For days and days, weeks, months, years on end. For days and days, weeks, months, years on end. Just get and start building. Just get and start building. Yeah. Yeah. See what happens. See what happens. Right? Right? So that's exciting to me. So that's exciting to me. Yeah. Yeah. Nice. Nice. Let's dive into it. Let's dive into it. The. The. The meat of the episode. The meat of the episode. You ready? You ready? What happened last week, bro? What happened last week, bro? Everyone listening? Everyone listening? If you haven't seen this already, I imagine half of If you haven't seen this already, I imagine half of you do because you might be connected with me on you do because you might be connected with me on LinkedIn and you would have seen the post that I LinkedIn and you would have seen the post that I put up, but I was finally, I was made. put up, but I was finally, I was made. My role, I should say, was made redundant at AWS. My role, I should say, was made redundant at AWS. So I was part of the latest wave of layoffs So I was part of the latest wave of layoffs that hit the company last week. that hit the company last week. And probably, I don't know how long it continues the And probably, I don't know how long it continues the wave for, but I was right there at the start, wave for, but I was right there at the start, and myself and my team, all 30 odd. and myself and my team, all 30 odd. How many of us there were in total, I can't How many of us there were in total, I can't remember. remember. We're all laid off at once. We're all laid off at once. So very sad, very difficult news. So very sad, very difficult news. But silver lighting I'm on. But silver lighting I'm on. I get to work on pilots, which is very, very I get to work on pilots, which is very, very exciting. exciting. But yeah, that happened last week. But yeah, that happened last week. On Wednesday, I saw the invite. On Wednesday, I saw the invite. So what I. So what I. What I wanted to do quickly was just talk about What I wanted to do quickly was just talk about the experience and share a bit of mindset that comes the experience and share a bit of mindset that comes along with it to hopefully help someone in that same along with it to hopefully help someone in that same situation. situation. And one crucial tip that I'll throw in. And one crucial tip that I'll throw in. So we set myself a timer of five minutes to So we set myself a timer of five minutes to get through this. get through this. Okay? Okay? So I'm not going to go deep. So I'm not going to go deep. If you want to know more, please message me on If you want to know more, please message me on LinkedIn and we can set up a coffee, chat, have LinkedIn and we can set up a coffee, chat, have a conversation. a conversation. I would love to talk with people about this stuff. I would love to talk with people about this stuff. I think it's very important. I think it's very important. So the first thing I just want to share is So the first thing I just want to share is just what happened. just what happened. So I got an invite to a confidential meeting. So I got an invite to a confidential meeting. I happen to be in Australia, and therefore, there are I happen to be in Australia, and therefore, there are more worker protection laws than some places, less than others. more worker protection laws than some places, less than others. So my colleagues in the United States and North America, So my colleagues in the United States and North America, where there are really barely any protection laws for employees, where there are really barely any protection laws for employees, they were just laid off, instantly lost access to their they were just laid off, instantly lost access to their laptops, couldn't log in. laptops, couldn't log in. Typical story you would have heard across the it sector Typical story you would have heard across the it sector with all these previous layoffs, me being in Australia, I've with all these previous layoffs, me being in Australia, I've been given a few days worth of consultation to talk been given a few days worth of consultation to talk about it, all those sorts of things. about it, all those sorts of things. And tonight, an hour before this podcast recording, my access And tonight, an hour before this podcast recording, my access was cut completely from the company. was cut completely from the company. So all that said and done, the process was what So all that said and done, the process was what you'd expect from a giant company the size of Amazon. you'd expect from a giant company the size of Amazon. All the stereotypes that you've been hearing around the industry, All the stereotypes that you've been hearing around the industry, it's all the same. it's all the same. I'm not going to get into a spiral of negativity. I'm not going to get into a spiral of negativity. I will make the comment that it could be more I will make the comment that it could be more human. human. It could definitely be more human. It could definitely be more human. And there is a point where you just feel like And there is a point where you just feel like a number on a piece of paper, right? a number on a piece of paper, right? And that's one of the most disappointing things, because personally, And that's one of the most disappointing things, because personally, I was at the company for just shy of eight I was at the company for just shy of eight years, and with that sort of tenure, with the performance years, and with that sort of tenure, with the performance rating, with my level, all those things, I would have rating, with my level, all those things, I would have expected a bit more, a bit more of a softer expected a bit more, a bit more of a softer touch. touch. A bit more appreciation shown, you really do feel like A bit more appreciation shown, you really do feel like a number on a piece of paper and just, you a number on a piece of paper and just, you know, swept out the door. know, swept out the door. So with that process set and done, I can say So with that process set and done, I can say right now that there is a process to handling that, right now that there is a process to handling that, and it is 100 million% mindset related. and it is 100 million% mindset related. I'm not saying that because we're piebites and all about I'm not saying that because we're piebites and all about the mindset, of course, but I am saying this because the mindset, of course, but I am saying this because it's the truth. it's the truth. If you don't have the mindset for this, it is If you don't have the mindset for this, it is going to be ten times harder than it has to going to be ten times harder than it has to be. be. And I don't mean you should just suddenly develop it And I don't mean you should just suddenly develop it overnight. overnight. I'm saying mindset is something you practice, something you build, I'm saying mindset is something you practice, something you build, you work on over time. you work on over time. And therefore, when you get hit with these roadblocks and And therefore, when you get hit with these roadblocks and these hurdles and you're thrown off a cliff like this, these hurdles and you're thrown off a cliff like this, you know what it is you need to do and you know what it is you need to do and how to handle it. how to handle it. So the first thing, again, being open and honest as So the first thing, again, being open and honest as always, the night that I realized it was happening, because always, the night that I realized it was happening, because I had the meeting invite in my calendar, knew it I had the meeting invite in my calendar, knew it was happening. was happening. You know, I sat down with my wife and we You know, I sat down with my wife and we sat there and we got upset about it. sat there and we got upset about it. You know, we mourned the loss. You know, we mourned the loss. We worried, we freaked out, we were anxious, we were We worried, we freaked out, we were anxious, we were stressing. stressing. It was an exhausting evening, you know? It was an exhausting evening, you know? And Bob, I remember you were saying, take the time, And Bob, I remember you were saying, take the time, Mandy, just disappear. Mandy, just disappear. So, um, you know, I didn't do pie bites at So, um, you know, I didn't do pie bites at night. night. And so there is that period. And so there is that period. You have to accept it. You have to accept it. You have to get upset, be angry, be frustrated, whatever You have to get upset, be angry, be frustrated, whatever you want to feel. you want to feel. But then there is a point where you just have But then there is a point where you just have to say what's next? to say what's next? And that might take time. And that might take time. For you, that's fine. For you, that's fine. For me, it took about a day and a half. For me, it took about a day and a half. I got to, after the meeting on Thursday that I I got to, after the meeting on Thursday that I had last week, pretty much got to Thursday night, to had last week, pretty much got to Thursday night, to Friday morning, and I was like, okay, what's next? Friday morning, and I was like, okay, what's next? What are we going to do? What are we going to do? And that's the point where I found myself going, how And that's the point where I found myself going, how do I find comfort? do I find comfort? What comfort works for me? What comfort works for me? What comfort? What comfort? Style. Style. Some people want to be alone. Some people want to be alone. Whatever. Whatever. Me, I love to be surrounded by people. Me, I love to be surrounded by people. So this weekend, I spent the whole weekend with people. So this weekend, I spent the whole weekend with people. I was out with the mate and Anthony Shaw on I was out with the mate and Anthony Shaw on Saturday. Saturday. I only say the name because you all know who I only say the name because you all know who he is probably. he is probably. On Sunday. On Sunday. I was at my neighbor's house. I was at my neighbor's house. We were having drinks and pizza. We were having drinks and pizza. The kids are playing. The kids are playing. It was fantastic. It was fantastic. Monday, I went to the office and said farewells to Monday, I went to the office and said farewells to everyone. everyone. Lots of hugs given out, lots of things like that. Lots of hugs given out, lots of things like that. It was just a beautiful three days of people and It was just a beautiful three days of people and that's given me a lot of comfort and it's also that's given me a lot of comfort and it's also shown me what matters to me. shown me what matters to me. And the big thing being that when I walked out And the big thing being that when I walked out of the building for the last time, I didn't feel of the building for the last time, I didn't feel sad. sad. I felt sad for the people that I was leaving I felt sad for the people that I was leaving behind, but nothing for the building, I didn't. behind, but nothing for the building, I didn't. I'm like, that's it. I'm like, that's it. My time at the company is done. My time at the company is done. It's great. It's great. I'm going to enjoy the time with these people. I'm going to enjoy the time with these people. That's more important to me. That's more important to me. And it's just gotten me through, and I feel so And it's just gotten me through, and I feel so uplifted. uplifted. I feel in control. I feel in control. I think one of the biggest things people feel is I think one of the biggest things people feel is that lack of control in these situations. that lack of control in these situations. But I feel that control, you know? But I feel that control, you know? Uh, and yes, complete transparency and obvious thing here I Uh, and yes, complete transparency and obvious thing here I have pie bites to lift me up and support me have pie bites to lift me up and support me here I have you, Bob. here I have you, Bob. I have these. I have these. This company we've built, which is a beautiful thing. This company we've built, which is a beautiful thing. After seven years of hard work, it's come into its After seven years of hard work, it's come into its own right. own right. I mean, we didn't build it for this purpose, but I mean, we didn't build it for this purpose, but as it became a company and everything like that and as it became a company and everything like that and successful, it was a reality that this is something that successful, it was a reality that this is something that can support and sustain us. can support and sustain us. And so having this to fall back on after all And so having this to fall back on after all those years of hard work is a. those years of hard work is a. Is a privilege, something I'm very proud of. Is a privilege, something I'm very proud of. And I know not everyone has that, but there is And I know not everyone has that, but there is still a lot of control in your hands with how still a lot of control in your hands with how you behave, how you react, what you're going to do you behave, how you react, what you're going to do next, how many jobs you're going to tackle every day, next, how many jobs you're going to tackle every day, what you're going to do during the leave that you're what you're going to do during the leave that you're given to find another job, those sorts of things. given to find another job, those sorts of things. And that's what you need to utilize 100%. And that's what you need to utilize 100%. You need to be in control of your mindset, of You need to be in control of your mindset, of your emotion. your emotion. Allow it to embrace it. Allow it to embrace it. Don't hold it back. Don't hold it back. Embrace at the start and then tell yourself, okay, I've Embrace at the start and then tell yourself, okay, I've mourned the loss. mourned the loss. I'm moving on. I'm moving on. I'm going to do something. I'm going to do something. And so with a couple of minutes left on this And so with a couple of minutes left on this podcast episode, I'm going to drop in. podcast episode, I'm going to drop in. The last tip is your network of people is the The last tip is your network of people is the most important thing that you have. most important thing that you have. I put up a post just sharing that I was I put up a post just sharing that I was laid off and the clothes I wore during my exit laid off and the clothes I wore during my exit interview or whatever it was, being told that I was interview or whatever it was, being told that I was laid off and the amount of the outpour of love laid off and the amount of the outpour of love and messaging and likes and just people messaging me, DM's, and messaging and likes and just people messaging me, DM's, text messages, phone calls, you name it, has really made text messages, phone calls, you name it, has really made me feel loved and appreciated and believe that it doesn't me feel loved and appreciated and believe that it doesn't matter that this has happened. matter that this has happened. I will be fine. I will be fine. And so I encourage you all to lean on your And so I encourage you all to lean on your network. network. My tip is this, if you have a strong network, My tip is this, if you have a strong network, there is a good chance that you spent so much there is a good chance that you spent so much time nurturing that network and nurturing those people. time nurturing that network and nurturing those people. You've given them time, they've relied on you, you've provided You've given them time, they've relied on you, you've provided a service, you've supported them, you've befriended them, whatever. a service, you've supported them, you've befriended them, whatever. In this moment of need where you've been laid off In this moment of need where you've been laid off or you've been made redundant, that's where you need to or you've been made redundant, that's where you need to lean on that network. lean on that network. That's where you need to take the pride aside and That's where you need to take the pride aside and say, hey, you know what? say, hey, you know what? You're my people, you're my friends, you're my colleagues. You're my people, you're my friends, you're my colleagues. I'm going to ask you, I'm going to be vulnerable I'm going to ask you, I'm going to be vulnerable and I'm going to ask you to support me. and I'm going to ask you to support me.
